Surgery A Success!
The following statement was released to the press today.
Kentucky Supreme Court Justice McAnulty Recovering Following Surgery
Brain Surgery performed July 11, 2007 at Jewish HospitalLouisville, KY (July 12, 2007)…Kentucky Supreme Court Justice William E. McAnulty, Jr., underwent brain surgery at Jewish Hospital on Wednesday, July 11. The 59 year-old Justice was diagnosed with lung cancer a little more than two weeks ago, which had also spread to the brain. The surgery, which lasted a little more than one hour, was performed by neurosurgeon Wayne G. Villanueva, M.D. “A ‘gross total resection’ was performed on Justice McAnulty to remove a lesion from the base of the cranium,” said Villanueva. “It was metastasis to the brain from the lung cancer. He came through the surgery extremely well. We moved him to our intensive care unit following surgery, which is normal for this type of procedure. We plan to move him to a regular patient room today.”Following recovery from his July 11 surgery, medical oncologist Jeffrey Hargis will be coordinating planned chemotherapy and radiation therapy. “The next phase of his treatment should be starting later this month,” said Hargis. His wife Kristie said, “We appreciate the kind thoughts and prayers from everyone and are especially thankful for all the support we have received from family and friends. We also want to thank all the wonderful doctors and nurses involved for the great care he is receiving at Jewish Hospital.” McAnulty has four children, two grown children from a previous marriage and two younger children, ages four and 12. The McAnulty family will not be providing media interviews at this time.
We welcome your words of encouragement for the McAnulty family in the comments below or in the guestbook page on the right.

My dear Justice, so glad to hear you’re doing well. I knew you and your family were in good hands at Jewish, no doubt about that. I do admire your open attitude. As always, I’ll have a good thought for you each day and I’m sure Ike is working from the other side for your continued good progress and return to health. You truly are one of a kind.

Dear Mr. Justice,
You are the “Mercedes Benz” of class and deportment. Be well and continue the good fight. Yo are sorely needed.
July 16th, 2007 at 9:29 pm
Mac,
When I heard about your diagnosis I knew you would respond with some solid one-liners. I underestimated you. Your comments in the CJ left me laughing out loud. Forget about your other accomplishments. You’re my hero for your ability to maintain your keen sense of humor, even in the face of adversity. My family and I have you in our prayers. Be strong.
July 16th, 2007 at 10:26 pm
Bill, I have always admired and held you in the highest esteem. My prayers are with you and your family. You have done so much for this community and we need you out there to continue carrying the torch. God Bless You!
July 16th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
I worked in Circuit Court back in the summer of 98 in Divison 8. Was the first time I came in contact with Judge Mac. He had a very positive impact on me. I doubt he remembers me, but he did invite me to his election party the year he was elected to the Supreme Court. He definitely deserved the win. It broke my heart, literally when I heard about him being ill. I truly believe he will come out smelling like a rose, and God will continue to work with him down the road.
You’ve made it this far, keep on going and will see you soon! My prayers are with you as well as love and all the happiness you deserve!

So thankful that your surgery went well. I am really glad that you did not “wake up a UK fan”!!! I will continue to pray for your total recovery. Karen Enlow (formerly Wilson - I was Patrick’s teacher when he was in the three year old class at the Baptist Seminary Child Enrichment Center. I’ll never forget the day Carla Brown & I were taking the class on a field trip to a dairy farm. You offered to chaperone, coat, tie & all. I remember telling you that we would be going into a milk parlor, riding a hay wagon, etc. You participated in it all with a smile on your face! It is so good to see that you still have that positive mental attitude!)

I have been following your progress after hearing of your diagnosis. I was pleased to hear that your oncologist is Dr. Jeffrey Hargis. More than five years ago I was diagnosed with lung cancer and with Dr. Hargis’ care and knowledge and many, many people praying diligently for me I have lived to tell it. You will be in my prayers as you begin your chemotherapy and radiation and your recovery. I have been there and know that you are on the right road.

Bill & Christy: I heard through the medical grapevine that the tumor in Bill’s brain was “marble-sized.” This bothered me IMMENSIVELY because I have noted that over the years, you have lost many other marbles in your brain. I am afraid your 2014 opposing candidate for the Supreme Court might accuse you of “losing all your marbles.” Get it? “Losing all your marbles….
Seriously, there are people all throughout the community wishing you well and praying as hard as they can. - David Richart, Natl. Institute on Children, Youth & Families, Inc. (We’ll have our Board meeting without you!

God speed to a full recovery. My prayers go out to you and the family. You have a strong network of friends and family and only fitting for a man that has come as far as you have. And always with a smile. I, too, am truly thankful that you did not come out of the surgery as Clarence Thomas. As a said there is nothing that you do without a smile. Again take your time to a full recovery.

Hi Mac,
A note to the former “light hitting second baseman”(decent glove) for the aptly named Court Jesters softball team of the late 1970’s, early 80’s:
Glad your surgery went well and wishing you a quick and successful recovery. Thanks for sharing your personal thoughts on cancer last week. We have a 21 year old son experimenting with smoking and are hoping your words hit home.
Always enjoy seeing you at ball games or other functions around town and look forward to seeing you in the future.
God bless.

Dear Justice McAnulty,
Margie and I wish you a fast and complete recovery. I love that you’ve not lost your great sense of humor.
As your longest surviving couple that you married, we know that you can do better than most with half your brain tied in back of you (to paraphrase that infamous radio guy).
We don’t see you nearly as often as we would like, but are every bit as supportive of you as ever.
Please get well soon.

I remember, like yesterday, our summer league baseball game against the Tigers. You were playing shortstop and Suggs wanted you to charge the ball harder. On the next “hit” to you, the ball took a bad bounce and gave you a “black eye”! Of course Stokely and the boys gave you a hard time (not me of course) The beauty of this story was that you came back and played a heck of a season at the shortstop position ( with no fear) I always admired you for that character. Keep charging that ball Mac. With you always. Hall

Dear Judge McAnulty,
I have admired your career over the years as a nurse/family therapist. I am thinking of you and your family and hoping that your treatments are not too God awful. I had cancer myself years ago and recall how kind of scarey it can be. I know that the love and support of your family, friends, and our community must be very special to you at this time.
I will keep you in my prayers every day and pray that you stay comfortable and strong.
Thank you for dedicating your life to help create justice in our community, state and world. The world is truly a better place because of your work.

Dear Judge McAnulty,
In my recent posting on the Web concerning your signing of an Opinion written by Judge Julia Tackett on Lawguru (Bluegrass Conspiracy) I mentioned that Tackett could use the defense of brain cancer for omitted vital law without disclosure.
This was written months before you were diagnosed and I truly wish you a full and speedy complete recovery.

Bill,
Jim Amy Perry and Kelsey and I have been praying for you everyday since we heard about your tumor. You have made Louisville a better place and if anyone deserves a pardon it is you. You have helped my family and myself so many times with nothing but gratitude. Kelsy is 11 years old now and is beautiful and has very limited scarring from the dog bite. I can’t begin to thank you enough for the jobs you helped me with to court and Kelsey your support has been endless and selfless without ever giving it a thought that we wouldn’t be able to return the favor. Your truely an angel on earth and I fully believe that you will be rewarded greatly. God is going to bless you and heal you, and you will spend the rest of your days loving your family and being an angel in other ways. We love and respect you. May God protect and keep you and yours as you have so graciously done for me and mine. Sincerely Charlotte Snider

You are a great inspiration to all of Greater Louisville and elsewhere, just keep the faith and remember God is still moving all over the world. He sees and knows all when His children are suffering; my family will keep you in our daily prayers, not just for you alone, but for your entire family, because when you are suffering, they suffer also.
God Bless you and yours,

Judge McAnulty and Kristi,
Just want the two of you to know that you and the entire family are in my thoughts and daily prayers.
I must tell you I was always proud to have a William McAnulty sign in my yard, as I respect you as an honest person. I love you Kristi.
If I can help in anyway, please call!

I have thought of you constantly since I heard the discouraging news about your health. Our Lord still performs miracles on a constant basis and I believe Him for complete healing for you. Debbie is an exemplary secretary and it has been my great privilege to know her and to know you. I do not know your family but they must be wonderful. I was in your office after the secretaries’ seminar and I felt peace there. Much love to you, Rena Bartlett

Judge McAnulty, I will always remember you as a wonderful person who helped me and my son in Family Court in 1976. My son’s father did not acknowledge being his father and I was tired of the entire process of having to answer personal questions. You told me that I could not quit because child support was for my son. My son did receive child support until he was 18 and he is now 31 years old with a Master’s degree in business administration, a wonderul, devoted father and husband who has three children. He doesn’t worry about his father but he knows that he will always do everything he can to support his family spiritually and financially. It was YOU that helped me to instill this in my son. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU WITH YOUR RECOVERY.

Justice McAnulty and family,
I am a law student at U of L in my second year. I have only recently been introduced to Justice McAnulty’s legendary legal career in this community. It began when I felt compelled to vote for him last November. Though I did not know much about him, I had heard much. What I have learned of him since has made me confident my vote was well cast, and I am greatly saddened that his potential as a Supreme Court Justice will, for the most part, go unrealized. However, I am comforted to know that his prior legal accomplishments will live on, as well his spirit and profound love for the law and civil service - something we both share. It didn’t take long for me to learn what a great jurist and human being he was. As a future member of the legal community, I am inspired and motivated by his career accomplishments and can only hope to become half the jurist that he was.
My thoughts are with you all.
